That the
Blackout of
2003 happened! I remember being at work, and around 4pm the power went out. We thought it was just another of the seemingly random power outages that had been happening that summer, and we would be back online within minutes. Well, when the power didn't come back on after half an hour, we knew it was time to go. We had to walk down 19 storeys of stairs to the ground level, and realized that the power outage wasn't localized to our office tower. No subway. No street lights. Nothing. I knew I had to walk home (which I do from time to time, and it takes about 1.5 hours). Luckily I had worn my Birkenstocks and shorts to work on that day, so it made the walk home a little easier in the 40 degree heat. With the increased foot traffic on Yonge Street I decided to walk up University/Avenue Road, and cut across north of St Clair. A smart choice! The outpouring of business owners on the street handing out water and offering support to the tired walkers was something I had never seen in Toronto ever before.
I made it home that night, happy that I lived on the 6th floor, and not the 27th, took out my trusty radio walkman and went to bed at 9pm because there was no more light left, so no reading. Well, I woke up the next morning and I had power for only a brief couple of hours, whereupon it left again, not to return until late on Saturday night! I didn't go to work that Friday, so, instead, I went for an early morning jog, and then sat out on my balcony in the sweltering heat and read a fantastic book, Carol Shields'
The Republic of Love. Later that day, when I realized that the power wasn't come back on, I had to throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food. With no food to eat, I left my house in search of sustenance. Frustratingly, I saw that the other side of the street had power! ARGH! It gave me hope that mine would come back later that day. Sadly, no.
Despite the lack of power, I had such a great weekend. I was able to read, get to bed early, and bond with my fellow Torontonians!
