It has been a while. I will say that winter is officially over. In the last two weeks we have had spring-like conditions. That means lots and lots of rain! We have definitely had some sunny breaks, but by and large, rain has been a constant. Since today is the last day of March, it looks like the month will truly go out like a lion. Rain all day. Dullness. Gray. I can't wait for April.
What have I done to combat these rainy evenings? Watch movies, of course. Lately I have been on a classics/foreign movie kick. I watched
Queen Christina, featuring the great
Greta Garbo in one of her finest perfomances. The movie is based on a historical figure, but not being too knowledgable about Swedish history, I am unsure as to how much artistic license was taken. The chemistry between Garbo and
John Gilbert was electric. It helps to know that the two were once engaged and that Garbo requested that Gilbert be her leading man in this film. Good choice all around. What is amazing about this film is the frank sexuality. The two main characters were unmarried, yet the film clearly shows that sexual relations occurred. Maybe the theory that the sexual revolution would have occurred earlier than the 1960's, if not for the onset of World War II, is true. It is clear that sexual relations before marriage was as frowned upon in 17th century as it was in the 1930's. There are numerous cases in the record books indicating "gunshot weddings" were very prevalent, for example, in
Scotland.
